The Center for Professional Mariner Development is centrally located in Bucksport, Maine. Thirty minutes from the Bangor International Airport, Bucksport is easily accessible by air and major roadways. Acadia National Park, Baxter State Park, and the Appalachian Trail are within driving distance so you’ll have many options for outdoor adventures on land, too.
We offer Advanced Firefighting and Basic Training as a dual certificate option; courses are taught concurrently, meaning that content for both courses is mixed in over the course of the training.
Certification for both classes will be issued upon successful completion.
Only the National Maritime Center (NMC) can provide you with accurate and up-to-date information concerning your Merchant Mariner Credentials.
If you have questions regarding your license, please visit the NMC website. For basic training and advanced firefighting renewal questions, please search ‘STCW Renewal’.
We are pleased to now offer both online and hybrid courses to allow you to complete your required trainings at your own pace.
For fully online courses: Once you complete your registration, you will receive a confirmation email with details on how to access the online coursework. You may complete the training at your own pace but may be required to finish one module before advancing to the next.
For hybrid courses: Hybrid courses require two steps. First, you will register for Part One of the training; upon doing so, you will receive a confirmation email with details on how to access the online coursework. You may complete Part One of the training at your own pace but may be required to finish one module before advancing to the next. Once you complete Part One, you may register for Part Two of the training. In doing so, you will select the assessment date that best fits your schedule and prepare to complete the requirements in person.

Maine Maritime Academy’s Center for Professional Development (CPMD) works diligently to provide necessary maritime training for the mariner, when they need it. To do so, CPMD schedules instructors that travel to our Bucksport, Maine facility to support – often at great distance. To ensure our fee structure remains affordable, CPMD must insist that any cancellations occur in a timely manner.
In person classes are refundable prior to the start of class. CPMD’s online classes have all been developed by our instructor cadre and are proprietary. Online classes are refundable until the learning management system, Canvas, has been first accessed. Full payment for the course(s) must be made when the course is completed or six (6) months after registration, whichever comes first.
In accordance with the above, cancellations will be refunded in full, minus the 2.75% credit card processing fee. CPMD makes every effort to maintain course schedules as posted. If, however, Maine Maritime Academy must cancel a course, we will notify registrants as soon as possible and issue a full refund including the credit card processing fee.
